Finally bit the bullet and got myself some root-trainers – hope they will prove worth the money! Also managed to find some proper New Horizon peat-free compost, hidden away out the back of the garden centre, only for those that ask for it
Trying out a new flavour of seed compost – the Arthur Bowler one. It’s a bit coarse compared to my favourite Levington’s, but the sand is good, and it’s definitely one up on the Westland one I tried to use last year, which was SO heavy and stodgy. I haven’t yet found any Westland compost that I liked, even though it’s supposed to be the “leading manufacturer” and stocked everywhere.
So, armed with my new root-trainers and fresh compost, I have done 24 broad beans for early planting, 5 swiss chards (Bright lights), and the last 3 pepper (Gourmet) seeds; also in the heated propagator, 20 cells of leek Matador, 6 Nemesia and 6 salpiglossis. All generously covered in vermiculite, which I failed to open properly (sliced up the nice resealable bag…). Potted up some of the achimenes, which were sprouting away already, and there are still quite a few more to do.
Oh, and a couple of scarlet cyclamen, which we planted into the top of the gladiolus pot on the patio – I thought that was rather a cunning move, keeping the cyclamen sheltered, and in view, and the pot can keep going through the summer.
